Diana, a professional painter and qualified designer, came to live on the Isle of Skye in 1992. She took three years out to study for a degree in Interior Design, taking the opportunity to develop her ideas in stained glass at the Edinburgh Stained Glass House, and painting, drawing and sculpture at The Edinburgh College of Art. While she was there she was given the opportunity to combine these skills in the partial refurbishment of a house in Edinburgh New Town. On returning to Skye Diana was asked to act as overall designer for the now famous, Three Chimneys Restaurant with Rooms.
The brief included all her new and existing skills. From designing and making large stained glass panels for the main entrance to furniture design, bar design, spatial planning, external landscaping, and oil paintings.
This year has seen the completion of the final addition to my home and working studio.
The requirement for a dedicated gallery exhibition space was becoming more of a necessity having grown out of my working studio.
A self contained self catering unit of five star standards was a project I dreamed of since the completion of my design work for ‘The Three Chimneys’.
[A retreat for two, with a sense of indulgence].
We arrived at the name Number Ten because that’s what we are!

The Three Chimneys had offered similar challenges, spatial design requiring the sympathetic mix of old and new.
Landscaping, connecting the existing garden sympathetically with an elevated field was challenging.
Rosie Cameron, garden designer, shared in my enthusiasm and helped enormously with the planning, and creating plus the building of the dry stone walls.
Stained glass design and make for the bedroom.
I had found a selection of sliced agates on my travels and had hoped to install them within a stained glass window design. The east wall of the bedroom was the perfect site offering the rising morning sun a perfect window to project colour throughout the room.
Furniture design - this prompted a very happy relationship with Touch Wood a company in Uig based on Skye who use recycled woods and offer training in furniture making.
I designed tables for the reception room and the bedroom using a selection of hard and soft woods.
A character cupboard for the kitchen, which appears to resemble a wardrobe.
A substantial head board was required to link with the high ceiling in the bedroom; I chose the carcass of whiskey barrels.
Alan Cleobury–Jones has joined me as my partner and work mate. As a percussionist and composer he needed a studio space. 2009 we are now married!
Thank you
My first thank you to my dear neighbours Neil and Cathy Macleod who gave us the land to produce this project.
Thanks to Willie Patterson the most patient architect who had to continually bring me down to earth.
Angus Nicolson Joinery Ltd. and his team have once again added to and have now completed the final addition to our home.
HIE who have supported all my additions with advice and encouragement.
Thanks to Home and Interiors Scotland who are going to run a feature on Number Ten.
FILM
We have finished the filming side of our project using five of my images [seen as the limited editions on this site] with HCVF television, Inverness, Anna was very patient and hugely creative in applying our verbal wishes and concepts.
I think she took her skills to where they had not been before.
A fantastic job Anna! Alan now has to compose the sound track.
The pilot can be seen in the film section through YouTube.
But Diana's main passion remains for painting the ever-changing scenes dictated by the elusive quality of Skye light. Changing tones and linear structures. The intensity of winter colours and contrasting textures cloudscapes and shadows.
