St Petersburg Art Prize Giving Spring and the Storm by Horatio Mcculloch were the two images used to inspire the art students for this years competitionI am so impressed with the standard and remarkable talent that I see around me today. I hope you enjoyed looking at William Mctaggarts wonderful paintings. I think he shows his diversity in two of his most famous paintings Spring and The storm. All of your paintings show an influence from him. In the painting Spring he captures a very natural study of two children relaxing informally in the sunshine. There is no sense of status here, like the impressionists so many were now painting outside and capturing simple social life. His application of paint is very free particularly obvious in his later seascape paintings one of the most famous The Storm. Through his vigorous brush strokes and the amount of paint he applies to the canvas he creates an atmosphere you can almost smell! It is understandable that his admiration Of Turner and Constable can be so easily recognised in his works.PRIZE WINNERSI think they speak for themselves , but the sensitive approach to the children I thought was admirable as is the graphite drawing of Mctaggart. The third prize has shown a strong understanding of Mctaggarts style.
